New Image Available – “Under Mala Wharf”

I’ve been processing through images I shot this past August, and will be adding new images from this trip for purchase in the upcoming months. One of the first ones available, both off of this site, as well as from Fine Art America, is this image, “Under Mala Wharf”.

I shot a different view last year of Mala Wharf at sunset – this one was from underneath the wharf, with the tide coming in during sunset. This wharf, just north of Lahaina, Maui, hasn’t been in use since the 1950’s, and a good portion of it collapsed during Hurricane Iniki back in 1992. The collapsed section is now an artificial reef, and the remaining section is abandoned (excpet for local fishermen who are out every sunset on the upper deck).

One of the most difficult parts of this shot is getting the proper exposure and lighting. A wide apeture is needed for getting as much light in as possible. Yet, that can cut depth of field to pick up the details. In this case, focusing on the “closer” details added a bit of blur to the distance, making the wharf seem even longer, yet catching the hightlights and splashes of the surf coming in.

I was able to get the exposure dialed in enough to pick up the colors without blowing out the hightlights – which brought out all the rust and discoloration in the concrete. What’s amazing about this view is you really get to see how this structure has deteriorated over the last 60+ years since it was used last. Major chunks of concrete have eroded away, exposing the rebar underneath. That steel has rusted to such a degree that it’s stained what’s left of the concrete, making for some incredible colors against the cool blues and greens of the surf.
